Frequently asked questions

What is GemRB?

GemRB isn't a mod in the normal sense. GemRB is an open source reimplementation of the Infinity Engine™ which powers the original games and most of the existing mods/total conversions. We are not affiliated in any way with BioWare or BlackIsle, or any of the companies involved in the making of the original games.
We are affiliated with the modding community, however. Many of you (us) have contributed to IESDP which made GemRB possible. You can read more about GemRB here, on these project wiki pages.

Is it possible to create a new game with GemRB?

Of course, but don't underestimate the effort involved. For more details and discussions, see newgame and the linked forum threads..

X/Y/Z doesn't work or is buggy. Where to report it?

First keep in mind this list.

GemRB isn't complete yet and we keep a bug list / todo on this wiki. See the todo and links in it before reporting a possibly known bug. Be verbose and describe your problem in detail or we may not be able to help you! Include an accurate GemRB version number, and if possible, backtraces for crashes, ctrl-m output for buggy NPCs/doors/containers, area names. In case of complicated bugs, try to provide save games, so we can reproduce them more easily.

There's also a bug tracker on the sourceforge page, but it is not used as much.

Does/will GemRB work on platform X/Y/Z?

GemRB already supports a wide array of software and hardware platforms and shouldn't be hard to extend to new ones. See platforms for more information and a list of current “ports”.

Which engines are supported at a playable state?

We believe that BG2, BG1, IWD, HOW, PST and IWD2 (in this order) are playable. IWD2 and PST are still under heavy development, but the rest can be played until the end.

Which mods don't work with GemRB?

GemRB is intended to support all mods/TCs that would work with one of the original engines. It can also support many of the mods that require .exe modification, but these mods may need to take some different steps, usually just tweak one of the data files shipped with GemRB. It is possible that some .exe modifications are not compatible with GemRB, but we work on making these as few as possible. Some of the exe hacks are obsoleted with this engine.

Can you play with more than 6 party members?

Yes! Check this thread for more information and screenshot or the mod list for a concise version.

Will GemRB support new feature X/Y/Z?

Perhaps. It is all about the limited resources we have, so any help is welcome. The first goal is to make the original games normally playable. Larger extensions will have to wait or be done by you. Modders can request new features here.

Can you use GemRB without any of the original games?

Sure. Firstly, a minimal dataset needed to run gemrb is included. Secondly, a minimal demo is in the works. Thirdly, you could use the bg2 demo to get a better feel of what the games or GemRB are about.

Infinity Engine is a trademark of BioWare corp.
